Squirrel cage induction motor (SCIM) consists of a cylindrical rotor on which aluminum bars are present inside the slots but there are no windings present.
The rotor bars of SCIM are joint or short circuited with aluminium end rings.
SCIM is used for general, rough and tough applications.
SCIM require less maintenance than WRIM.
The cost of SQIM is less than that of WRIM.
Wound rotor induction motor
In Wound rotor induction motor (WRIM), 3-phase windings are present on the rotor.
In WRIM the rotor windings are brought out and connected to the carbon slip rings.
WRIM is normally used where high starting torque is required.
WRIM can be used in applications requiring speed control for loads, but SCIM can’t be.
The cost of WRIM is more than that of SQIM.
